about me.

I'm amos bastian, a developer based in slovakia who builds products. right now that's autovirality, which turns short-form formats that already work on tiktok, instagram, and youtube into posts for your business, then schedules and publishes them.

I write about whatever I'm working on. that used to be self-hosting, and it'll probably be game dev next.

what I do.

building products.

I build my own products and post about them on 𝕏. right now that's autovirality. before that I worked on contentbase, a tool for starting a business blog.

software engineering.

I mostly write typescript these days, after years of python. I've open-sourced a bunch of next.js starters and nx monorepo templates, and lately I've been using effect and drizzle.

writing.

my blog has guides with the full code included. so far they're about self-hosting on a $5 vps, which is how I ran my projects in 2024.

game dev.

it's what I'm getting into at the moment, and what I'll probably write about next.

what sets me apart.

I ship my own things.

I build products end to end, from the code to getting them in front of people. autovirality is the current one.

I don't get attached to tools.

I went from aws to a $5 hetzner vps, then dropped that setup too once it stopped being worth it. I use whatever gets the current thing shipped.

I keep an eye on cost.

side projects with real users on aws got expensive fast. that's why I tried self-hosting in the first place, and I still check what something costs before I build on it.

I write things down.

if something took me a while to figure out, I write it up with all the code so the next person doesn't have to. mistakes included, like the time I left my servers wide open.

I build in public.

I post progress on 𝕏, and this site is open source.

projects & products.

there's also a list on my projects page.

autovirality

automates short-form content for founders and small businesses. it adapts formats that are already working on tiktok, instagram, and youtube, then generates, schedules, and publishes posts across platforms. it's what I'm building now.

contentbase

a tool for starting an seo-optimised business blog. I sold it.

fpl

an async python wrapper for the fantasy premier league api, which I wrote in 2018. it's my most-starred repo, with over 300 stars.

understat

an async python package for getting football stats from understat.com, with around 190 stars. I also made a bot for r/FantasyPL.

template

a next.js app with authentication and payments built in, using planetscale, drizzle orm, lucia, tailwind, and lemonsqueezy. it has around 240 stars.

amosbastian.com

this site. astro, mdx, and tailwind css, deployed to cloudflare workers. the source is public.

self-hosting guides

two posts from 2024 on running apps on a $5 vps with sst and hardening it with ansible. I don't use that setup anymore, but the guides still work as a starting point.

my background.

I got into programming through python and football. in 2018 I wrote a wrapper for the fantasy premier league api, then a package for understat and a bot for r/FantasyPL, plus some tools for utopian.io on steem.

around 2020 I switched to typescript and started building full-stack apps, mostly with next.js, and open-sourced the starters and boilerplates I made along the way.

in 2023 I was deploying side projects to aws. some got real users, and the bill got my attention. in 2024 I moved everything to a $5 vps, started this blog, and wrote up how I did it.

after that I built and sold contentbase, and now I'm building autovirality. on the side I'm getting into game dev.

how I work.

start simple.

I use the simplest setup that works and only add more when a project actually needs it.

ship first, write later.

I get something working in a real project before I write about it, so the posts come from things I ran myself.

open source what I can.

if I build a starter or a wrapper for myself, I usually put it on github in case it saves someone else time.

probably game dev, since that's what I'm spending my free time on.

no. the self-hosting posts are from 2024 and I've moved on since, but they're still up if they help.

what happened to contentbase?

sold it. I'm not working on it anymore. autovirality is what I'm focused on now.
